Warner Bros. Reveals Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest Film at CinemaCon

Warner Bros. has officially unveiled the first feature film set in the Game of Thrones universe. The project, carrying the working title Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, was revealed during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, appearing at the end of a 28-title slate labeled “2027 and beyond.”ign

A Targaryen Origin Story

The film will center on Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror who united the Seven Kingdoms and forged the Iron Throne, drawing from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire mythology. Aegon, alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, waged a war of conquest across Westeros with dragonfire, a story that has loomed over the franchise since its beginning but has never been depicted on screen.moneycontrol

Beau Willimon has been tapped to write the screenplay. Willimon is best known as the showrunner of Netflix’s House of Cards and as a writer on Disney+’s Star Wars series Andor. No director, cast, or release date has been announced.qazinform

A Working Title, Not a Final One

Variety, which first reported the title, noted that the name may not be permanent. “It’s possible that the title will change in the coming months or years,” the outlet reported. The reveal itself came with little ceremony — the title simply appeared as the final entry on Warner Bros.’ upcoming slate, though the announcement nonetheless drew attention as confirmation of the long-rumored project.variety

The film marks a notable expansion for a franchise that has until now lived exclusively on television, first with HBO’s Game of Thrones and more recently with its prequel series House of the Dragon. Moving into theaters places the property alongside other major fantasy franchises competing for big-screen audiences, though with the project still in early development, much remains to be determined before cameras roll.ign
