Hyundai Plans to Deploy 25,000 Atlas Robots in US Auto Plants

Hyundai Motor Group is preparing one of the largest humanoid robot deployments in manufacturing history, with plans to place more than 25,000 Boston Dynamics Atlas robots across its Hyundai and Kia production facilities in the United States. The rollout is set to begin in 2028 at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah, Georgia, with expansion to Kia’s Georgia plant in the second half of 2029.humanoid

Factory of the Future

The plan, first announced at CES in January 2026, calls for building annual production capacity of 30,000 Atlas humanoid robots by 2028 at the Georgia facility, alongside more than 300,000 actuator units annually. Initially, the robots will handle parts sequencing tasks, with their roles expanding to component assembly by 2030 and eventually taking on heavy lifting, repetitive actions, and complex operations throughout production lines.reuters

According to Reuters, Hyundai is accelerating development through partnerships with Nvidia and Google, aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and real-world deployment capabilities. Boston Dynamics has said all Atlas deployments are already fully committed for 2026, with fleets shipping to Hyundai’s Robotics Metaplant Application Center and Google DeepMind.bostondynamics

Kia CEO Song Ho-sung outlined the phased deployment during recent overseas investor road shows, describing a timeline that moves from initial deployment at Metaplant America to broader global manufacturing facilities.humanoid

Atlas Kicks Off “School of Football” Campaign

Alongside its industrial ambitions, Hyundai this week launched a marketing campaign titled “School of Football” featuring the Atlas robot ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The campaign showcases Atlas learning real-world sport-inspired movements, from basic drills to celebrations, as a demonstration of physical AI capabilities. The Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min appeared impressed by Atlas performing a “Ghost Rabona” trick in the campaign materials.hyundai

The Bigger Picture

The deployment represents Hyundai’s broader transformation from a traditional automaker into what it calls a “smart mobility solutions” enterprise spanning robotics, AI, and hydrogen technology. Atlas can lift 110 pounds, operate autonomously, and can reportedly be trained for most tasks in under a day. The company has stated its goal is to alleviate physical burdens on workers by assigning higher-risk and monotonous tasks to robots, while laying groundwork for commercial robotics applications beyond automotive manufacturing.chosun
