Zuckerberg Says Meta Cloud Computing Business Is ‘Definitely on the Table’

Mark Zuckerberg told shareholders on Wednesday that Meta Platforms could enter the cloud computing market, raising the prospect of a new competitor in an industry dominated by Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

“It’s definitely on the table,” Zuckerberg said at Meta’s annual shareholder meeting on May 27, according to CNBC, describing the possibility as contingent on the company having excess data center capacity from its AI infrastructure buildout.cnbc

A Byproduct of Massive AI Spending

The remarks come as Meta pursues one of the largest corporate infrastructure campaigns in history. In April, the company raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between $125 billion and $145 billion, up from a prior range of $115 billion to $135 billion, as it builds out data centers to support its pursuit of superintelligence. Meta spent $72.2 billion on capex in 2025, meaning this year’s spending could nearly double that figure.fortune

Meta has also committed to investing at least $600 billion in U.S. AI data center infrastructure by 2028, including the 2,250-acre Hyperion campus in Louisiana and the Prometheus facility in Ohio. In January, Zuckerberg announced Meta Compute, a dedicated initiative to strengthen the company’s AI infrastructure and build “tens of gigawatts” of energy capacity.yahoo

From Cloud Customer to Potential Competitor

The potential pivot is notable because Meta is currently a major cloud customer itself. In August 2025, the company signed a six-year cloud computing deal with Google worth more than $10 billion, utilizing servers, storage, and networking services, according to Reuters. Meta also uses Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.facebook

No concrete plans or timeline have been announced for a Meta cloud business. But if realized, it would put the company on a collision course with the three established hyperscalers in a market that analysts estimate at roughly $600 billion. The shareholder meeting, held virtually at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, also addressed proposals on AI risk disclosure and content moderation.sec
