Federico Valverde produced one of the great individual Champions League performances on Wednesday, scoring all three goals as Real Madrid overwhelmed Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Uruguayan midfielder became the first player from his country to score a hat-trick in the Champions League, completing his treble before halftime to leave Pep Guardiola’s side facing a daunting deficit ahead of next week’s return leg.beinsports
City started brightly, with Antoine Semenyo testing Thibaut Courtois and Jérémy Doku driving across the face of goal, but it was Madrid who struck with ruthless efficiency on the counterattack. Valverde opened the scoring after 20 minutes, latching onto a long ball from Courtois, rounding goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and finishing from a tight angle. Seven minutes later, a pass from Vinícius Júnior deflected into Valverde’s path and he drove a low left-footed shot beyond Donnarumma to double the lead. The best was saved for last: Brahim Díaz lobbed the ball over Rúben Dias for Valverde to flick past Marc Guéhi and volley home three minutes before the break, completing a sensational treble.espn
The second half brought little reprieve for City. Díaz continued to torment the visitors, while Vinícius won a penalty after being brought down by Donnarumma, only for the goalkeeper to save the spot kick. Arda Güler and Vinícius both went close to extending the lead. Erling Haaland might have pulled one back but was denied by a crucial Antonio Rüdiger intervention, while Nico O’Reilly was stopped by Courtois. The result was a particularly bitter blow for English clubs in the Spanish capital, coming a day after Tottenham were beaten 5-2 by Atlético Madrid.espn
The defeat leaves Guardiola, who drew level with Sir Alex Ferguson’s record of 190 Champions League matches as manager, with an enormous task ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, March 17. City were already without injured Joško Gvardiol and Mateo Kovačić, while Madrid thrived despite the absences of Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo. For Álvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso as Madrid coach in January, the victory represents a defining early statement, with the winner of this tie set to face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the quarterfinals.youtube
