Amazon Web Services has launched a new capability within its Web Application Firewall that allows content owners and publishers to charge AI bots and agents for accessing their protected web content, marking a step toward formalizing the economic relationship between AI companies and the publishers whose material they consume.
Announced on June 15, the AI traffic monetization feature operates as part of AWS WAF’s existing Bot Control system. When an AI bot or agent requests a protected resource—such as an article, data feed, or licensed archive—AWS WAF returns a machine-readable HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response using the x402 open protocol for machine-to-machine payments. Publishers can configure pricing through the AWS WAF console, define policies based on bot verification status, and receive payouts in stablecoins to their preferred wallet. AWS does not process payments or take a fee on content revenue. The initial payment settlement and verification flows are provided by Coinbase’s x402 Facilitator, while integration with Stripe for direct account payments and Machine Payments Protocol support is listed as “coming soon”.amazon
The WAF feature builds on infrastructure AWS unveiled in May, when it announced Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments in partnership with Coinbase and Stripe. That system gives AI agents their own wallets, funded with either stablecoins or fiat currency, enabling them to make autonomous micropayments for APIs, web content, and other services.paymentsjournal
Stripe co-authored the Machine Payments Protocol with Tempo in March 2026, establishing an open standard for agents and services to coordinate payments programmatically. AWS is not alone in pursuing this model. Cloudflare launched its “Pay per Crawl” marketplace in mid-2025, allowing website owners to set per-crawl rates for AI companies accessing their content.
