Apple confirmed on Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference that the most powerful on-device AI capabilities coming in iOS 27 will be restricted to devices with at least 12GB of unified memory, leaving the standard iPhone 17 and all iPhone 16 models behind.
The company’s “most powerful on-device model and the features it enables, like expressive voices and more advanced dictation” will run only on the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, as well as iPads with M4 chips or later and Macs with M3 chips or later that have at least 12GB of memory. The base iPhone 17, which shipped last September with 8GB of RAM, is excluded.techradar
The divide underscores a new tier within Apple Intelligence. While the broader Siri AI overhaul — including conversational context, on-screen awareness, and personal data integration — will be available on iPhone 16 models and newer, the top-tier on-device inference requires the additional memory headroom that only the Pro and Air models provide.engadget
The WWDC keynote centered on Siri AI, a comprehensive redesign of Apple’s assistant powered by models built in collaboration with Google. Siri AI introduces a standalone app with synced conversation history across devices via iCloud, a Dynamic Island animation during processing, and the ability to answer questions based on what the camera is seeing. Apple is also opening Siri to third-party AI services including Claude, Gemini, and Grok through an “Extensions” system in Settings.mashable
Craig Federighi also disclosed that some Apple Intelligence features, including image generation, will carry daily usage limits. The new Image Playground relies on server-side processing through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure rather than running locally, enabling higher-quality photorealistic output but constraining how often users can access it.cnet
The memory requirement creates a clear upgrade incentive for Apple’s installed base. With the standard iPhone 17 and all prior models capped at 8GB, users seeking the full AI experience will need hardware released at the Pro or Air level — a distinction Apple had not previously drawn within a single iPhone generation.9to5mac
