OpenAI’s services suffered widespread disruptions on Friday, May 29, as ChatGPT, the API, DALL-E, Codex, Sora, and login systems all went offline simultaneously, leaving thousands of users around the world unable to access the company’s AI products.
According to Downdetector, more than 5,000 reports flooded in as users across the globe struggled to access ChatGPT. The majority of complaints — 86% — pointed directly at the chatbot itself, while smaller shares of users flagged issues with the app and web browser. In India, nearly 400 users reported problems on Downdetector.in, with 89% citing issues with ChatGPT directly.timesnownews
OpenAI’s status page confirmed two simultaneous incidents on May 29: one affecting users’ ability to log in or create accounts, and another involving issues with conversations. StatusGator recorded 140 user-submitted reports of outages in the 24 hours surrounding the event. The Economic Times reported that both ChatGPT and Codex were affected, with users saying “Codex not giving status” and “ChatGPT not loading”.statusgator
OpenAI acknowledged the disruption on its status page, confirming that mitigation measures had been put in place and that it was monitoring recovery. By early Friday afternoon Pacific time, the company marked all impacted services as fully recovered. Reports on Downdetector began tapering off as the outage wound down.openai
However, OpenAI has not disclosed the root cause of the disruption. The simultaneous failure across six separate product surfaces suggests a shared infrastructure dependency rather than isolated product issues.aiweekly
The outage comes amid increasing scrutiny of AI service reliability as enterprises evaluate providers for mission-critical workloads. OpenAI’s status page shows the company has maintained 99.98% uptime overall, but the platform has experienced 117 tracked outages since October 2025. Friday’s disruption arrived one day after competitor Anthropic closed a reported $65 billion funding round and launched its latest model, placing provider reliability squarely in the spotlight for enterprise buyers weighing their options.isdown
