Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra on Sunday at Computex 2026 in Taipei, marking the company’s most powerful Surface laptop to date and one of the first Windows PCs to run on Nvidia’s new RTX Spark superchip. The announcement represents a notable shift for the Surface line, which has historically relied on Intel and AMD processors, toward an Arm-based architecture built with Nvidia and MediaTek.
The RTX Spark at the heart of the Surface Laptop Ultra is a system-on-chip combining a 20-core Nvidia Grace CPU — developed with MediaTek using TSMC’s 3-nanometer process — with a Blackwell-architecture GPU packing 6,144 CUDA cores and fifth-generation Tensor Cores. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang introduced the chip during his Computex keynote at Taipei Music Center, saying “40 years later, and Nvidia is going to reinvent the PC”.engadget
The chip supports up to 128GB of unified memory shared between CPU and GPU, and Nvidia claims it delivers one petaflop of AI compute — enough to run AI models with up to 120 billion parameters locally, without relying on cloud services. Nvidia compared its GPU performance to the RTX 5070 laptop chip but with considerably lower power draw.gadgets360
The Surface Laptop Ultra features a 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness and a pixel density of 262 pixels per inch — the brightest display Microsoft has shipped on any Surface device. It includes full CUDA support, a first for the Surface lineup, enabling professional workloads in 3D rendering, software compilation, and AI development.pasqualepillitteri
Connectivity includes HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, along with what Microsoft calls its largest haptic touchpad to date. The device weighs under 4.5 pounds and will ship in Platinum and Nightfall finishes.gadgets360
Microsoft is positioning the Surface Laptop Ultra as a direct competitor to Apple’s MacBook Pro, targeting creators, developers, and AI professionals. RTX Spark laptops will also ship from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI this fall. Microsoft has not disclosed pricing, and the Surface Laptop Ultra is expected to be available later in 2026.pcmasterrace
