Nvidia has become the number-one vendor in the global data center Ethernet switching market for the first time, according to IDC’s Quarterly Ethernet Switch Tracker, marking one of the fastest ascents in the history of enterprise networking.gurufocus
The chip designer’s Ethernet switch revenue, generated entirely from its Spectrum-X platform, surged 192.7% year over year in the first quarter of 2026 to reach $2.1 billion, giving the company a 21.5% share of the data center segment. The milestone displaces incumbents Arista Networks and Cisco Systems, which had long dominated the category.yahoo
The broader Ethernet switch market grew 39.8% year over year to $15.4 billion in Q1 2026, according to IDC, but the data center segment outpaced the rest with 61% growth, reaching $10 billion. Enterprise campus and branch office switching, by comparison, grew 12.3% to $5.4 billion.yahoo
The disparity reflects how AI workloads — particularly large-scale training and inference clusters — are driving networking investment at a pace that dwarfs traditional enterprise demand. Nvidia’s CFO Colette Kress said during the company’s most recent earnings call in May that Spectrum-X is now “larger than all Ethernet network peers combined.”marketbeat
Nvidia’s rise in Ethernet switching has been remarkably rapid. As recently as Q3 2025, the company held an 11.6% share of the data center Ethernet switch market, ranking behind both Arista and Cisco. By Q1 2025, that share had already reached 21.2% according to IDC data, as its revenue hit $1.46 billion. One year later, it commands the top position.fool
IDC attributed the shift to Nvidia’s integrated approach, which bundles its Spectrum-X switches with GPUs and software into unified “AI factory” designs that traditional networking vendors cannot replicate with standalone hardware. Meta and Oracle are among the major customers that have standardized on Spectrum-X for their AI data center networks.163
The reshuffling puts pressure on established networking players even as the overall market expands. Dell’Oro Group reported earlier this year that Nvidia and Celestica together captured roughly 50% of Ethernet switch sales in AI back-end networks during 2025. Arista maintained its lead in the total Ethernet data center switching market through the end of last year, according to Dell’Oro, but the Q1 2026 IDC data suggests that advantage has now narrowed or reversed in the data center segment.yahoo
The question facing the industry is whether buyers will continue to favor vertically integrated solutions or push back toward open, multi-vendor Ethernet ecosystems as AI clusters scale to hundreds of thousands of GPUs.
