Semyon Skrepetsky, a 44-year-old Russian satirical artist known for mocking Vladimir Putin and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, was shot dead on the morning of June 15 in a parking lot in Biała Podlaska, eastern Poland, in what police described as a likely execution. A Belarusian citizen was detained near the Belarusian consulate in the city in connection with the killing.meduza

The Killing

Skrepetsky, whose real name was Robert Kuzovkov, was shot multiple times at close range outside a local apartment building, according to Polish outlet wPolsce24. Paramedics who responded were unable to save him. Police sealed off roads and exits from the city and placed schools and daycare centers under guard.meduza

A police spokesman told TVN24 that “execution” was a leading theory. “If someone approaches a specific person on the street and shoots, everything indicates they planned to kill them,” he said.kavkaz-uzel

Investigators believe at least two people were involved. According to the Belarusian opposition Telegram channel DzikMedia, a Belarusian taxi driver drove the killers to the scene; when they pointed a gun at him, he panicked and tried to flee toward the Belarusian consulate, where he was detained. Police said they were still searching for the remaining suspect.meduza

A Life of Provocation

Skrepetsky, a native of Bashkortostan who moved to Poland in 2021 and received refugee status, had built a following for his caustic caricatures of Russian and Chechen political figures. His targets included Putin, Kadyrov, Kadyrov’s son Adam, and Akhmat commander Apti Alaudinov. Just a day before his death, he posted a painting depicting the Kadyrovs with pig snouts and hooves after Adam Kadyrov was reappointed Hero of Chechnya.meduza

Three days before the shooting, on June 12 — Russia Day — Skrepetsky traveled to Berlin and staged a one-man protest carrying an icon-like caricature of Joseph Stalin and Putin. His final Telegram post, published the morning of his death, addressed the threats he had been receiving.kavkaz-uzel

A Pattern of Targeted Killings

The killing echoes a long history of Kremlin and Kadyrov critics being targeted abroad. Skrepetsky had previously reported that Instagram blocked his account after he posted videos mocking Kadyrov. According to investigative outlet iStories, he was also listed in Ukraine’s Myrotvorets database for criticizing Ukrainian authorities.meduza

The Caucasian Knot, a regional news outlet, noted that Chechen authorities have pursued critics abroad for years, citing the 2020 murder of Chechen dissident Mamikhan Umarov in Austria as one of several similar cases.kavkaz-uzel
