Sir Tom Stoppard, the Czech-born British playwright whose linguistically dazzling works made him one of the most celebrated dramatists of his generation, died peacefully Saturday at his home in Dorset, England, surrounded by family. He was 88.
United Agents announced his death, stating he “will be remembered for his works, for their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his profound love of the English language”.nbcnews
Stoppard won five Tony Awards for best play—more than any playwright in history—beginning with “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” in 1968 and concluding with “Leopoldstadt” in 2023. He also earned an Academy Award in 1999 for co-writing “Shakespeare in Love” with Marc Norman.cbsnews
Stoppard’s breakthrough came in 1966 when “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” a tragicomic reimagining of “Hamlet” from the perspective of two minor characters, premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before transferring to London’s National Theatre and Broadway. Asked repeatedly what the play was about, he reportedly quipped to a woman outside a Broadway theater, “It’s about to make me very rich”.opb
His other Tony-winning works included “Travesties” (1976), “The Real Thing” (1984), and “The Coast of Utopia” (2007). Stoppard’s plays blended philosophical inquiry with theatrical wit, earning him three Olivier Awards and coining the term “Stoppardian” to describe works featuring sophisticated wordplay and intellectual complexity.cbsnews
Beyond theater, Stoppard wrote screenplays for “Brazil” (1985), “Empire of the Sun” (1987), “Enigma” (2001), and “Anna Karenina” (2012). He also contributed uncredited work to “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”.aljazeera
Born Tomáš Sträussler in Czechoslovakia in 1937, Stoppard fled with his Jewish family to Singapore as a baby to escape the Nazis. His father, an army doctor, died during the Japanese invasion, and his mother later married British officer Kenneth Stoppard, bringing the family to England in 1946.cbsnews
Stoppard only discovered in his 50s that most of his extended family, including all four grandparents, had perished in concentration camps. This late revelation informed “Leopoldstadt,” his deeply personal 2020 play about a Viennese Jewish family across the 20th century, which he told Broadway.com was about “the character I didn’t have to create because he was me”.broadway
The Olivier Awards announced that West End theaters will dim their lights for two minutes in Stoppard’s memory on Tuesday, December 2, at 7 PM. Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger paid tribute, saying, “Tom Stoppard was my favourite playwright. He leaves us with a majestic body of intellectual and amusing work”.deadline
Stoppard was knighted in 1997 and is survived by his wife Sabrina Guinness and four sons.opb
