Paris’s Centre Pompidou will close its doors on Sunday for an unprecedented five-year renovation, marking the end of an era for one of the world’s most visited modern art museums. The iconic high-tech building, opened in 1977, has welcomed over 180 million visitors in nearly five decades but now requires comprehensive structural and environmental upgrades.france24
The closure comes just days after German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans concluded his expansive exhibition “Nothing could have prepared us – Everything could have prepared us” across 6,000 square meters of the museum’s former Public Information Library. The final weekend drew crowds of Parisians eager to bid farewell to the permanent collection before its temporary departure.parisjetaime
The renovation project, awarded to French firm Moreau Kusunoki Architectes in partnership with Mexican architect Frida Escobedo Studio, addresses critical infrastructure needs that have accumulated over nearly five decades. The €262 million technical renovation will remove asbestos from the building’s colorful exterior facade, treat structural corrosion, upgrade fire safety systems, and improve accessibility throughout the Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano-designed structure.architecturalrecord
“This project is an opportunity to reinvent the original utopia of the Centre Pompidou,” said Laurent Le Bon, president of the Centre Pompidou, emphasizing that the renovation will respect the building’s revolutionary inside-out architectural concept while adapting it for contemporary use.wallpaper
The renovation will also create new public spaces, including the first-time opening of a seventh-floor terrace offering panoramic views of Paris, expanded children’s areas, and improved visitor circulation throughout the building.dezeen
While the building undergoes renovation, the Centre Pompidou has launched its ambitious “Constellation” initiative, distributing portions of its collection across partner institutions worldwide. This program already includes a Constantin Brancusi exhibition that opened yesterday at Amsterdam’s H’ART Museum, featuring over 30 masterpieces from the world’s largest Brancusi collection.hartmuseum
Other Constellation exhibitions are taking place at Centre Pompidou-Metz, which is hosting a Maurizio Cattelan showcase through February 2026, and at the Bund Museum in Shanghai with “Highlights of the Pompidou.” Additional partnerships span from the Grand Palais in Paris to venues in Brazil, Italy, and China.centrepompidou
The renovation period coincides with the development of Centre Pompidou Francilien – Fabrique de l’Art, a new 30,000-square-meter facility in Massy, scheduled to open in autumn 2026. This innovative space will serve as both a conservation center for the museum’s 140,000-work collection and a cultural venue with public programming, ensuring the Pompidou’s mission continues even during the Paris building’s closure.sortiraparis
The Public Information Library, which closed earlier this year, has already relocated to Paris’s 12th arrondissement and will remain accessible to the public throughout the renovation period.centrepompidou
The Centre Pompidou’s reopening is scheduled for the first quarter of 2030, when visitors will encounter a transformed institution that maintains its pioneering spirit while meeting 21st-century cultural and environmental standards.architecturalrecord
