Apple announced on Wednesday that its global App Store ecosystem facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025, marking the platform’s largest annual total and underscoring the growing economic weight of its marketplace ahead of the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week.business-standard
The findings, drawn from a new study by economists at Analysis Group, show that apps featuring consumer-facing artificial intelligence grew four times faster than their non-AI counterparts among the top 100 applications. Forty of the top 100 apps now incorporate some form of consumer-facing AI, according to the report.appleinsider
“Developers are the lifeblood of the App Store, and this year’s remarkable achievement highlights their limitless creativity,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “We are wholeheartedly dedicated to equipping developers with the necessary tools, technologies, and reliable platforms to innovate for the future.”appleinsider
Apple emphasized that more than 90% of the billings and sales facilitated by the App Store ecosystem were commission-free, meaning developers did not pay Apple for the vast majority of transactions. The commission-free total amounted to roughly $1.437 trillion. Categories such as physical goods and services — including purchases on platforms like Amazon and food delivery apps — along with in-app advertising from services like TikTok and Instagram, make up the bulk of that figure.business-standard
The ecosystem has nearly tripled in size since 2019, with billings and sales more than doubling in China over the past six years and tripling in the United States and Europe.appleinsider
Spending patterns varied by region. In the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Brazil, travel ranked as the second-largest category of physical goods and services spending, while in Korea food delivery took that position. Apple also noted it welcomed thousands of developers to its developer centers in 2025 and plans to open a new Developer Center in Berlin in 2026.appleinsider
