Dutch Police Recover Stolen 2,500-Year-Old Golden Helmet of Coțofenești

Dutch authorities on Thursday unveiled the golden Helmet of Coțofenești, more than 14 months after the priceless 2,500-year-old artifact was stolen in a brazen heist at the Drents Museum in the northern Netherlands. Two of the three gold Dacian bracelets taken in the same robbery were also recovered, though the search for the third bracelet continues.nltimes

Under the guard of balaclava-clad police officers, prosecutors displayed the ancient helmet during a press conference. Dutch police officer Corien Fahner said the team was “delighted” to announce the recovery. Art detective Arthur Brand, known as the “Indiana Jones of the Art World,” confirmed the find to AFP, calling it “the best news we could have got”.yahoo

A Daring Heist

The helmet and three gold bracelets were stolen on January 25, 2025, when a gang of robbers used firework bombs to blow open a side door of the Drents Museum in Assen. Surveillance footage showed the thieves smashing display cases and fleeing in a stolen car that was later found burnt out several miles away. The artifacts, on loan from Romania’s National History Museum in Bucharest, were part of a traveling exhibition titled “Dacia: Kingdom of Gold and Silver” that had been scheduled to close the following day.cnn

The 5th-century BC helmet, insured for 4.3 million euros, is one of Romania’s most revered national artifacts from the ancient Geto-Dacian civilization. The theft sent shockwaves through the art world and strained relations between Romania and the Netherlands.apnews

Long Road to Recovery

Three suspects from a town near Amsterdam were arrested days after the heist, followed by additional arrests in subsequent months. Dutch prosecutors said in May 2025 that phone taps and covert recordings indicated the stolen objects had not been melted down and were still intact. The suspects largely remained silent in court throughout the proceedings.romania-insider

Brand said he and police had been working contacts to persuade the alleged robbers to hand over the helmet in exchange for a more lenient punishment. Romania had already collected the full 5.7 million euro insurance payout for the four stolen artifacts in September 2025. The helmet was found with light damage, according to reports.indiatimes
