Not a single internal combustion engine vehicle cracked the list of China’s 16 best-selling car models in May 2026, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), marking what industry observers have called a watershed moment for the world’s largest auto market.facebook
The milestone came as China’s NEV retail penetration rate surged to a record 62.9% in May, while sales of conventional ICE passenger vehicles plummeted 39% year-on-year, driven by high oil prices and an accelerating consumer shift toward electrification.cnevpost
The top five best-selling models were all battery electric vehicles. Geely’s Xingyuan (marketed internationally as the EX2) claimed the number-one spot with 38,751 units, followed by the Tesla Model Y at 28,911 units and the Xiaomi SU7 at 24,023 units. Leapmotor’s A10, launched in late March, continued its explosive trajectory with 22,060 units sold, while Tesla’s Model 3 surged 519% month-on-month to 18,370 units.carnewschina
Even sixth-placed BYD Sealion 06, which offers both pure electric and plug-in hybrid variants, saw its electric version outsell the hybrid by nearly four to one.carnewschina
BYD maintained its position atop the automaker rankings with 376,990 NEV passenger car sales in May, narrowly halting eight consecutive months of year-on-year domestic sales declines. The company’s total sales including commercial vehicles reached 383,453 units. However, BYD’s domestic deliveries fell 24% year-on-year, with overseas shipments hitting a record 160,644 units — more than 42% of total volume and an 80% year-on-year increase.cnevpost
Among Chinese NEV brands, the domestic retail penetration rate reached 81.4%, underscoring the near-complete displacement of foreign-brand ICE vehicles from the mass market.cnevpost
Total passenger vehicle retail sales in China fell 22.1% year-on-year in May to 1.51 million units, with the contraction concentrated almost entirely in the ICE segment. NEV retail sales were 950,000 units, down 7.5% from a year earlier but up 12.4% from April.cnevpost
Nio delivered 37,705 vehicles in May, a 62.3% year-on-year gain and its highest monthly total of 2026, with its ES8 continuing to lead China’s large SUV segment. Leapmotor set an all-time monthly record at 81,569 deliveries, up 81% year-on-year.quiverquant
China also exported 424,000 NEVs in May, a 112.6% year-on-year surge representing 54% of all passenger vehicle exports — the highest share on record.cnevpost
