Meta has officially begun the global rollout of Instagram Plus, a new optional paid subscription tier priced at $3.99 per month that gives everyday users access to more than 11 exclusive features focused on Stories, analytics, and profile customization.
The subscription, which Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced via video on June 4, centers largely on giving users more control over their Stories experience. Story Extend lets posts remain visible for 48 hours instead of the standard 24, while Story Spotlight allows subscribers to push one Story per week to the front of followers’ Story trays for increased visibility.9to5mac
Other features include the ability to create unlimited audience lists beyond Close Friends, view Stories anonymously without appearing in the poster’s viewer list, see aggregate rewatch counts on your own Stories, and search your viewer list for specific users. Subscribers also gain access to custom app icons, customizable bio fonts, up to six profile pins, animated Super Heart reactions, and the option to post directly to a profile or highlights without appearing in followers’ feeds.engadget
According to Instagram’s official blog post announcing the launch, the subscription is “designed to give you more of what you love about Instagram,” with more capabilities planned in the months ahead.instagram
Instagram Plus is part of a wider monetization strategy Meta unveiled on May 27, when it announced parallel subscription plans across its platform family, as first reported by TechCrunch. Facebook Plus launched at the same $3.99 monthly price point, while WhatsApp Plus debuted at $2.99 per month with messaging-focused perks like custom themes and additional pinned chats.techcrunch
Meta is also testing higher-tier offerings under a new “Meta One” umbrella, including AI-focused plans at $7.99 and $19.99 per month, and professional creator plans ranging from $14.99 to $49.99 per month in select markets.techcrunch
The subscription had been in limited testing since late March in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines at lower price points ranging from roughly $1 to $2.20 per month. The jump to $3.99 globally signals Meta’s confidence in the premium tier’s value proposition. The free version of Instagram remains unchanged, and Meta has emphasized that Plus is entirely optional.techcrunch
The move marks a notable shift for a company that has relied almost entirely on advertising revenue, as Meta seeks to diversify income through direct consumer payments across its apps.
