A groundbreaking study published today challenges one of exploration’s most enduring myths, revealing that Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary ship Endurance was doomed by fundamental design flaws—and the famed explorer knew it before setting sail in 1914.iflscience
The research, published in the journal Polar Record by Professor Jukka Tuhkuri of Aalto University, dismantles the long-held belief that Endurance was “the strongest polar ship of its time” when it sank in Antarctic waters in November 1915. Instead, the study found the vessel was significantly weaker than other polar ships of its era and was never designed for the crushing ice conditions that ultimately destroyed it.popsci
The study reveals Endurance suffered from several critical structural deficiencies compared to contemporary Antarctic vessels. The ship had weaker deck beams and frames, an unusually long machine compartment that created a vulnerable section in the hull, and lacked the diagonal bracing beams essential for withstanding compressive ice forces.iflscience
“Even simple structural analysis shows that the ship was not designed for the compressive pack ice conditions that eventually sank it,” Tuhkuri said. His calculations revealed that other polar ships of the period could withstand compressional loads 1.7 to 2.7 times greater than what Endurance could handle.popsci
The vessel was originally built for Arctic tourism during milder summer months, not for year-round Antarctic exploration. Unlike purpose-built polar ships with oval shapes and shallow keels that allowed ice to slide underneath, Endurance was a relatively elongated vessel with a tall keel that gave ice dangerous purchase on the hull.newscientist
Perhaps most remarkably, the study found that Shackleton was fully aware of his ship’s limitations before departing. In correspondence to his wife, Emily, he lamented the vessel’s weaknesses, writing that he would “exchange Endurance for his previous ship any day”.iflscience
The explorer had previously advised strengthening another polar ship, Deutschland, with the very diagonal beams that Endurance lacked. That vessel survived eight months trapped in Antarctic ice.nytimes
“Shackleton knew about this,” Tuhkuri explained. “In fact, he had recommended diagonal beams for another polar ship when visiting a Norwegian shipyard. That same ship got stuck in compression ice for months and survived it.”popsci
Tuhkuri, who participated in the 2022 Endurance22 expedition that discovered the wreck, was surprised that no fundamental structural analysis had ever been conducted on the famous vessel. His research challenges not only the ship’s reputation but also the common explanation that a damaged rudder caused the sinking.iflscience
The study doesn’t seek to diminish Shackleton’s heroic achievement in saving all 28 crew members, but it does raise questions about the decisions that led to the disaster. “We can speculate about financial pressures or time constraints, but the truth is we may never know why Shackleton made the choices that he made,” Tuhkuri concluded.popsci
